Ceres Pups Wrestling Club takes first at home event

The Ceres Pups Wrestling Club hosted an SCWAY Folkstyle Tournament last month.

The Pups Brawl was staged on Jan. 19 at Ceres High School.

“We had lots of individual winners in all divisions and our Pups cheer team also performed,” said Steve Festa, club president and founder.

Ceres placed first in the overall standings at the 31-team event.

The Pups totaled 344 points.

Calaveras Youth Wrestling (340) and Oakdale (331.5) finished second and third, respectively.

“The hard work we’ve been putting in the room is paying off,” Festa stated. “We actually train four days a week. Their strength and conditioning is allowing them to be confident and have success. They’re having fun.”

Jayden Aceves took first with a 4-0 record in the 10-and-under beginners 99-pound division.

He beat Lions Wrestling Club’s Arturo Huerta (pin, 0:51), Central Catholic Wrestling Club’s Gabriel Gregoris (pin, 1:09), Crusader Wrestling’s Victoria Bejaran (pin, 1:17) and Ceres Pups’ Hunger Ferreira (pin, 2:22).

Aceves also took first in the 10-and-under beginners 80-87-pound division.

He won all four of her matches.

Aceves beat Minarets Wrestling Club’s Joseph Olson III (pin, 1:06), Argonaut Jr. Mustangs’ Colton Wilson (pin, 1:12), Minarets Wrestling Club’s Kaleb Rodriguez and Gomez Brothers Grappling Academy’s Xzavier Machuca (pin, 0:43).

Landon Ormonde took first with a 3-0 record in the middle school 95-pound division.

He beat Oakdale’s Grant Dixon (decision, 6-5), Central Catholic Wrestling Club’s Colton Cox (pin, 1:26) and Argonaut Jr. Mustangs’ Maximus McGath (technical fall, 18-1).

David Ortiz took first with a 1-1 record in the 12-and-under beginners 70-75-pound division.

He beat Central Catholic Wrestling Club’s George Bogetti (pin, 3:32).

Lincoln Whittenburg took first with a 3-0 record in the eight-and-under 50-pound division.

He beat Oakdale’s Jameson Larrabee (pin, 2:25) and Maddox Herndon (pin, 1:24), and Ceres Pups’ Barrett Dickinson (pin, 2:00).

Whittenburg also took third in the eight-and-under 55-pound division.

He won five of six matches.

Whittenburg beat Lions Wrestling Club’s Liam Cao (pin, 0:24), Oakdale’s Maximus Montes (pin, 1:25), Turlock’s Shay Govea (pin, 0:25), Lions Wrestling Club’s Lucas Carlbom (pin, 1:25) and Oakdale’s Brayden Asher (pin, 0:51).

Rambo Jacuinde took second with a 2-1 record in the 12-and-under 116-pound division.

He beat Calaveras Youth Wrestling’s Patrick Stewart (technical fall, 15-0) and Gladiator Wrestling’s Kailaya Philpot (forfeit).

Zoey Swartz took second with a 2-1 record in the 10-and-under 111-pound division.

She beat Ceres Pups’ Ricardo Ochoa Jr. (pin, 1:09) and Central Catholic Wrestling Club’s Mia Lopez (pin, 1:57).

Aaliyah Kemplin took second with a 3-1 record in the 12-and-under beginners 97-pound division.

She beat Crusader Wrestling’s Sophia Bejaran (pin, 1:28), Minarets Wrestling Club’s Fiona Vance (pin, 1:09) and Turlock’s Micah Blackhart (decision, 14-9).

Leyla Contreras took second with a 3-1 record in the eight-and-under 70-76-pound division.

She beat Crusader Wrestling’s Benicio Barajas (medical forfeit), Calaveras Youth Wrestling’s Kash Hevle (pin, 2:00) and Oakdale’s Duane Goodman (pin, 1:00).

Easton Caraveo took second with a 2-1 record in the eight-and-under 60-pound division.

He beat Argonaut Jr. Mustangs’ John Newman (pin, 1:12) and Calaveras Youth Wrestling’s Geno Varni (pin, 0:37).

Barrett Dickinson took second with a 2-1 record in the eight-and-under 50-pound division.

He beat Oakdale’s Anden Meyers (decision, 13-10) and Jaguars Wrestling Club’s Jackson Martinez (major decision, 9-0).

Lauro Zuniga took second with a 3-1 record in the six-and-under 68-pound division.

He beat Turlock’s Lane Soares (major decision, 14-0), Hughson’s Jennings McLaughlin (pin, 0:22) and Argonaut Jr. Mustangs’ Rizik White (major decision, 10-1).

Lauro Zuniga also took third in the six-and-under 58-pound division.

He won three of four matches.

Zuniga beat Ceres Pups’ Israel Navarro (technical fall, 16-0), Gomez Brothers Grappling Academy’s Talan Prentice (pin, 0:50) and Ceres Pups’ Connor Hidahl (major decision, 17-6).

Hunter Ferreira took third with a 2-2 record in the 10-and-under beginners 99-pound division.

He beat Lions Wrestling Club’s Arturo Huerta (pin, 1:06) and Crusader Wrestling’s Victoria Bejaran (pin, 0:54).

Adrian Dominguez took third with a 3-1 record in the middle school 80-85-pound division.

He beat Tracy Wrestling Club’s Hunter Brandon (pin, 1:05), Central Catholic Wrestling’s Andrew Vazquez (pin, 1:01) and Motherlode Wrestling Club’s Paige Warne (pin, 0:27).

Jael Aceves took third with an 0-2 record in the eight-and-under 84-pound division.
