Whitmore Charter’s junior-varsity girls volleyball team accomplished a first in program history this season.

The Wolves won the CVSL Tournament, which was staged Sept. 30-Oct. 1, at different school sites throughout Stanislaus County.

“The girls worked really hard,” Whitmore Charter head coach Cristy Hansen said. “They were very supportive of each other. They had positive attitudes.”

The Wolves compiled a 3-0 record at the CVSL Tournament. A total of eight teams competed at the event.

Whitmore Charter shut out St. Stanislaus 2-0 in the finals at Our Lady of Fatima.

“They worked really well together,” said Hansen, whose team bested St. Stanislaus three times this year. “They shined.”

Visiting Whitmore Charter exacted revenge with a 2-0 victory over top-seeded Hart Ransom in the semifinals on Oct. 1.

Whitmore Charter lost to Hart Ransom twice in three sets during the regular season.

“The girls were very focused,” Hansen said. “They really wanted to win. Hart Ransom gave us two of our three losses in league.”

Whitmore Charter edged Vanguard 2-1 in the first round on Sept. 30 at Hart Ransom.

Whitmore Charter’s BrookLynn Graham and Naomi Newton were both named to the all-tournament team.

“They were both very consistent in all areas,” Hansen said.

The Wolves had a roster size of 12 players this fall, including eighth-graders Giselle Birring, Jada Brown, Abby Moring and Lucy Newton, and seventh-graders Jackie Brickner, Thalia Castaneda, BrookLynn Graham, Annie Hansen, Harper James, Liza Merriam, Naomi Newton and Maya Olide.

“It was amazing to watch them grow and play so well together,” coach Hansen said. “They had positive energy. They all wanted to help each other.”
